Avengers: Endgame passed a big milestone this weekend (conveniently as Comic-Con hit), finally achieving its aim of becoming the most successful film in box office terms and snatching the crown from James Cameron's Avatar.
Announced by studio boss Kevin Feige at the Marvel Studios panel that dominated Comic-Con's Saturday evening schedule, it was a slight cheat, as the film had not quite ticked over at the time, but will when the final figures are tallied. It was helped by the recent relaunch with added footage, and some extra earnings from around the world. We now like to imagine Team Marvel rooting around couches for spare change.
"A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights," Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn said in a statement. "Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s Avatar remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience. The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora." Which is perhaps not all that surprising, given that Disney also now controls Fox, home of Cameron and Avatar.
The company is moving on to Phase Four of the MCU, with a wealth of announcements this weekend. Read our full wrap-up here.
