Though there has been a lot of chatter recently about Arnold Schwarzenegger invading the Avatar universe for the next three – count ‘em – movies, that idea has been denied and remains floating in the Rumoursphere. One person who looks set to definitely hang around is one of the least likely from the original: Stephen Lang’s Colonel Miles Quaritch.
The tough-as-old-steel-boots marine was the major antagonist of the first film, dedicated to protecting the human colonists and miners by fighting – and later, attempting to eradicate – the native Na'vi population, Quaritch proved to be a dangerous man. Of course, there’s the small matter of him dying courtesy of Neytiri (Zoe Saldana)’s bow, but according to Avatar overlord James Cameron, death with only be a slight challenge to Quaritch.
“Stephen was so memorable in the first film, we’re privileged to have him back,” Cameron said. “I’m not going to say exactly HOW we’re bringing him back, but it’s a science fiction story, after all. His character will evolve into really unexpected places across the arc of our new three-film saga. I really look forward to working with such a gifted actor, who’s also become a good friend.”
Writers Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Shane Salerno are all currently working with Cameron on the scripts for the second, third and fourth films, which should kick off shooting next year and are scheduled to hit cinemas in December 2016, 2017 and 2018. Apparently we’ll be exploring some brand new areas of Pandora, including its oceans. So now we know Quaritch will probably be in the market for some really big undersea mines…
