It should come as little surprise to anyone that Avatar held on to its crown as box office champion across the pond this weekend, adding $48.5 million to its running $429m US total.

While Titanic's box office record might not yet quite be in its sights, James Cameron's latest has plenty of time still to run before it ventures on to DVD, and hey! Even if it doesn't beat Titanic, the director still has the two highest-grossing films of all time so we doubt he's too worried.

And while it continued to find success, its slot-mates in the top three remained constant, with Sherlock Holmes in second with $16.6 million and Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel holding third with $16.3 million.

You have to head down to fourth place to find the first of this week's new releases, as futuristic vampire thriller Daybreakers arrives to the tune of $15 million, while the new Amy Adams comedy Leap Year rode some dodgy reviews to sixth place and $9.1 million.

The one other new release for the week was the delayed Michael Cera comedy Youth In Revolt, which launched in ninth and made $7 million.

Otherwise, the chart looked largely unchanged, with the likes of It's Complicated, The Blind Side and Up In The Air all holding on.
