After delving into family fantasy with last year’s A Wrinkle In Time, filmmaker Ava DuVernay is returning to the world of socio-political injustice (which she explored in MLK biopic Selma and prison-industrial complex documentary 13th) with a new Netflix series. Formerly titled Central Park Five, fresh details of the series have just arrived – it’s official name is now When They See Us, and it’s coming to the streaming service on 31 May this year. The first trailer has debuted, along with a batch of new images.

The four-episode series – each directed by DuVernay, who also co-wrote – tells the story of the ‘Central Park Five’, five teenagers of color from Harlem who were convicted of a rape they hadn’t committed. The show will take place across 25 years, from the teens’ initial questioning about the crime in 1989, through to their eventual settlement in New York in 2014. It stars the likes of Jovan Adepo (recently seen in Overlord), Hamilton star Christopher Jackson, A Wrinkle In Time’s Storm Reid, Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga, Felicity Huffman, Famke Janssen, John Leguizamo, and more.

Here are some additional new images from the series:
