The recent history of the Terminator franchise has not, to put it kindly, been garlanded with glory. But there was slight cause for hope in the future when it was announced back in January that James Cameron would be producing a potential next instalment. Now his good friend and the most iconic element of the films, one Arnold Schwarzenegger, says he'll return for the next film. Wait, is there another way he might have said it?
Talking to Screen International at Cannes, Schwarzenegger revealed that he's met with Cameron to discuss the new film.
"It is back," he says. "It is moving forward. He has some good ideas of how to continue with the franchise. I will be in the movie."
Of course, Schwarzenegger's involvement doesn't guarantee a good result (see: Terminator Genisys, among others), but the idea of him collaborating again with Cameron (even if the latter only produces because of his Avatar sequel duties) is a tempting one. Last we heard, Cameron was talking to Deadpool's director Tim Miller about taking it on, but there has been no word since.
In related Schwarze-newsing, he also dropped word that the long-gestating Conan reboot is still, well, grinding the development wheel around. "It’s being rewritten... the idea is to do it."
And then there's Triplets, the sequel to Twins that has seemed like so much vaporware since it was first mooted. Schwarzenegger, however, is confident it'll go forward. "The script will be finished in a month," he says, before adding that Danny DeVito and Eddie Murphy are both still attached, alongside original director Ivan Reitman. "It’s just around the corner." Almost feels more like a threat than a promise.
Next up Schwarzenegger (and the reason he was at the festival) is narrating Wonders Of The Sea 3D (surprisingly not one that appears to have Cameron involved) and adventure film Journey To China: The Mystery Of Iron Mask.
