Aquaman box office haul is now at more than $1.1 billion dollars worldwide, which is not bad for a film featuring an aquatic creature playing the drums. While Warner Bros. didn't hit the "commission sequel" button as quickly as you might think once the cash began to flood in, development is well under way on the new movie. The studio has now announced an official release date of 16 December, 2022.
David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick is already at work on the script for the film, but the storyline remains a mystery for now. Presumably it'll pick up the next chapter in Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa)'s adventures as he figures out his position ruling Atlantis and no doubt faces new challenges as well as returning threats (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II could potentially return as Black Manta, as teased at the end of the first film).
Still floating in limbo is who will direct; while James Wan would naturally be the first choice to come back, he's so far only a producer on the sequel, helping to guide the scripting stages and making his mind up as to whether he truly wants to commit to another turn in the big chair. We'd guess he will be back, but that'll have to wait for an official announcement.
And that's not the only Aqua-content headed our way, as Wan and fellow producer Peter Safran are also working up a spin-off featuring the fearsome creatures of The Trench. That one could potentially arrive before Arthur Curry makes his return.
