When your last collaboration won both of you Oscars, it's perhaps not shocking that a writer/director and actor would look to team back up again. And that's just what has happened with The Son, as filmmaker Florian Zeller wrote a role for his The Father star Anthony Hopkins.
The film, again adapted by Zeller and co-writer Christopher Hampton from the former's play, has already wrapped shooting in New York, France and London. It follows Peter (Hugh Jackman) and his new partner, Beth (Vanessa Kirby), whose life with their new baby is thrown into disarray when his ex-wife, Kate (Laura Dern), turns up with their teenage son, Nicholas (Zen McGrath). As for Hopkins, Zeller has yet to reveal what he plays in the film.
"After our journey on The Father, I couldn’t make another film without Anthony," he says in a statement. "He was the first one to read The Son‘s script, as one of its characters was written especially for him. Having him by our side to tell this new story has been an honour, a profound joy and very emotional." Hopkins won Best Actor at this year's Oscars, while Zeller and Hampton picked up Best Adapted Screenplay. The emotional story of a man dealing with dementia landed four other Academy nominations including Best Picture. The film should be out next year.
