An American Beauty-style comedy

Want a juicy comedy? How about Oranges?

That’s the name of a dark new comedy, to be produced by Andrew Bregman and written by Jay Reiss and Ian Helfer, which will explore the problems caused when an older man embarks upon a romantic relationship with the teenage daughter of a family friend.

The project has been described – admittedly by someone close to it – as ‘American Beauty, if American Beauty had more comedy’. Well, American Beauty already had a fair amount of comedy in it, but we’re guessing that this means that it will be much broader and less dramatic than the Sam Mendes Oscar-guzzler.

It also seems to bear a slight resemblance to the Michael Caine ‘80s comedy, Blame It On Rio, but perhaps it’s too early to say for sure. As for the cryptic title, we're not sure. Oranges signify death in the Godfather trilogy, but that's probably not the case here. Any ideas, readers?

Bregman will produce via his A Likely Story banner (that’s a likely story etc. etc.), with funding for the film yet to be entirely secured. But it seems like it’s only a matter of time. We’ll keep you posted if and when a director and actors sign on.
