At this point, it's more news if a Marvel movie doesn't launch top of the box office. And while it might not be an Infinity War-level behemoth, Ant-Man And The Wasp topped the Stateside charts this weekend, earning a studio-estimated $76 million.
That's a stronger domestic opening than the 2015 original, pointing to a potentially stronger performance for the sequel in the coming weeks. Worldwide, the new movie has earned more than $161 million, though there are a few international markets (including that pesky delay in the UK) still to open.
The Marvel arrival in the charts pushed Incredibles 2 down to second place, though seemed to put little dent in its Disney stablemate's earning power. The animated sequel took in $29 million this weekend, breaking the record for an animated film held by fellow Pixar entry Finding Dory. Incredibles 2 has taken in $504.3 million so far in the States, surging to $772.7 million globally. In related big box office news, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom made $28.5 million across the three days, and has crossed the billion dollar mark worldwide.
The First Purge, this week's second new entry, arrived to $17.1 million. That represents the lowest opening for a Purge franchise entry, though the concept still appears to be going strong, heading to TV this year. Sicario: Day Of The Soldado (as the film is known across the pond), added $7.3 million to round out the top five.
Comedy Uncle Drew went home with $6.6 million, ahead of Ocean's 8, which slipped a couple of places to seventh on $5.2 million. Tag fell to eighth, making $3.1 million, with documentary superstar Won't You Be My Neighbor? adding screens and jumping up one place to ninth with $2.5 million. Deadpool 2, meanwhile, was 10th, taking in $1.6 million.
