While Conan has had his shot at a new film more recently back in 2011, Red Sonja has enjoyed less luck. Potential versions have come and gone, and now Millennium Media is trying yet again, aiming to hire a writer as a soon as possible.
Sonja is sort of a Robert E. Howard creation like Conan The Barbarian, but actually has more to do with Roy Thomas' Conan comics for Marvel. Howard's Red Sonya of Rogatino doesn't inhabit the same world or time period as Conan and doesn't wear a chain-mail bikini; it was Thomas that revamped her as the amazon sword-maiden we now recognise. She was previously embodied onscreen by Brigitte Nielsen in 1985, with Arnold Schwarzenegger also on-hand as the all-but Conan Prince Kalidor.
"We have been waiting for the right time for this remake," says Millennium's Avi Lerner, "and with the success of Wonder Woman, the audience has spoken. They want female heroes." That's true, though Sonja has proven resistant to actually making it to the screen. Robert Rodriguez and his then-fiancee Rose McGowan planned to have her star; and Amber Heard has been mooted before when Lerner was hoping to get the movie made in 2011. So we'll have to find out whether Wonder Woman truly has swung the portal doors open for Sonja to succeed.
