Like Terrence Malik before him, French filmmaker Leos Carax's work is long-awaited – indeed, it has been nine years since Holy Motors. But he's come roaring back with Annette, starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, which has a trailer online.
Originally slated to open the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, the film was delayed due to the pandemic, which wiped out last year's in-person event. Undeterred, it will now open the 2021 version on 6 July.
Set in modern-day Los Angeles, Annette is the story of Henry (Driver), a stand-up comedian with a fierce sense of humour who falls in love with Ann (Cotillard), a world-renowned opera singer. Under the spotlight, they form a passionate and glamorous couple. With the birth of their first child, Annette, a mysterious little girl with an exceptional destiny, their lives are turned upside down...
Carax worked with innovative pop/rock band Sparks to craft the music and more – because despite the presence of much actual singing in the teaser, this is a full-blown musical, written by Sparks' Ron and Russell Mael.
With Simon Helberg also in the cast, Annette will arrive in cinemas and then on Amazon Prime Video in late summer this year.
