We were already looking forward to the long-heralded arrival of Captain Marvel, with Brie Larson playing the titular hero. Now the cast is adding a multiple Oscar nominee, as Annette Bening has joined the ranks.
The movie, with Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck directing, finds Larson as Carol Danvers, a skilled test pilot whose DNA is melded with that of Kree warrior Mar-Vell. Subsequently, she gains powers such as flight, enhanced strength, damage resistance and the ability to absorb and re-channel energy. Set in the 1990s, the film will see Danvers going up against the evil, shape-changing Skrulls.
This being a Marvel production, details on Bening's character have yet to be released, though The Hollywood Reporter has heard that she'll be playing a scientist of some sort. Will she be heroic? Villainous? That's for the future to reveal. Does anyone have the Time Stone handy? Thanos, put your gauntlet-happy hand down!
Bening joins a cast that also includes Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn and returning actors Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou. Captain Marvel is still on track to arrive on 8 March next year.
