Though she kicked off her career on TV with short-lived comedy drama Get Real, Anne Hathaway doesn’t usually show up much on the small screen these days, and that’s usually for talk shows or voicing characters on animated series. But she’s now heading for the medium in a big way, signing on to star in miniseries The Ambassador’s Wife.

Producer Mark Gordon snapped up the rights to Jennifer Steil’s novel, which hit bookshelves last month, and was inspired by the writer’s time as the British Ambassador’s wife in Yemen. But the plot spins a fictionalised yarn about an American woman kidnapped in the Middle East and her struggle to be reunited with her husband.

“The Ambassador’s Wife is an incredible story that pulls you in immediately and resonates with all of us based on the images and news headlines that are pervasive in our lives today,” blurbed Mark Gordon in a statement. “We are so fortunate to have Anne starring in this timely, gripping, and compassionate drama. She is in a league all her own and we cannot think of anyone who can better portray Steil’s complex heroine.”

Hathaway will next be seen in Nancy Meyers’ The Intern, which is out here on October 2, and returns as the White Queen for Alice Through The Looking Glass, headed our way on May 27 next year.
