It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about DreamWorks Animation’s plan to turn the Troll toy franchise it bought into a film. With Shrek Forever After director Mike Mitchell assigned to bring it to life, he’s hired Anna Kendrick as the first voice cast member.

Exactly what the trolls will be doing in the film remains to be seen, but we do know that Kendrick will voice (and sing as) the cheery Princess Poppy.

“Anna has proven herself to be a brilliant actress with an amazing singing voice,” Mitchell said in a statement picked up by Variety. “She’ll inject Poppy with the exact mix of spirit, sass and song that will no doubt give a whole new life to the iconic Troll dolls.”

We’re guessing there will be some threat to the big-haired creatures’ way of life that will require some help from the princess. 20th Century Fox has a October 21, 2016 release date pencilled in for the movie over here, before it heads to the US on November 4. Animated trolls appear to be very hot right now, between Frozen’s magical beings, Laika’s **The Boxtrolls **and this lot.

Kendrick is spending a lot of time singing or playing a princess (or both) at the moment: she's also Cinderella in Rob Marshall’s Sondheim adaptation Into The Woods, due here on January 9. On a less regal note, she is currently busy working on Pitch Perfect 2, reprising the role of main character Beca, who will be dealing with more a capella issues this time around.
