We've seen Angelia Jolie play action heroes in the past, and she's had powers in the likes of Maleficent (and its upcoming sequel). But though she's dabbled in comicbook fare before (Wanted), she's now taking aim at the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jolie's in talks to join The Eternals.
It's a surprising move, though the MCU has attracted big names before to appear alongside the stars it either creates or reclaims. The Eternals, beyond its comic origins, is still an unknown quantity, but something must have caught Jolie's eye in Chloe Zhao being hired to direct or the script from Matthew and Ryan Firpo.
Created by Jack Kirby in 1976, the saga began millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered and near-immortal beings and a more monstrous off-shoot known as the Deviants. The two races moved behind the scenes throughout human history. According to The Hollywood Reporter's sources, the film's story will include a love connection between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.
The Eternals for now is in development and hasn't been saddled with a release date; chances are Marvel will announce its slot once the dust (sorry) has settled on Avengers: Endgame, due on 25 April here.
Jolie has the aforementioned Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil scheduled for an 18 October release in the UK, and is a voice performer and producer of CG animal/live-action blend family comedy The One And Only Ivan. She's also recently worked on fantasy pic Come Away.
