If we had a nickel for every time Andy Samberg signed on to a high-concept romantic comedy, we’d have… two nickels. OK, that’s not a lot, but it’s funny that it’s happened twice. That’s right, having brought the laughs and the love in time loop romcom Palm Springs, Samberg is set to star alongside Jean Smart in 42.6 Years, an Amazon Studios comedy feature from I, Tonya and Cruella director Craig Gillespie.
As announced by The Hollywood Reporter, the film – written by The Menu scribe Seth Reiss – will see the Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor play a young man who, in order to save his life, undergoes an experimental procedure in which he is cryogenically frozen. When he wakes up (you guessed it!) 42.6 years later, physically unchanged thanks to having been frozen, Samberg’s character finds himself entirely alone and relying on the help of his ex-girlfriend who is now much older – and played by Jean Smart. It all sounds kinda sorta American Pickle-ish with a Sambergian twist.
No news yet on a release date for 42.6 Years, but Gillespie has past form when it comes to quirky romcoms (if you haven’t seen Ryan Gosling starrer Lars And The Real Girl you’re missing out). And with Smart having recently dazzled in HBO’s Watchmen, Mare Of Easttown, and Hacks, hopefully this continues her hot streak. Samberg rarely misses as well, so feel free to cryogenically freeze us and wake us up when this one arrives.
