America Ferrera

It still takes a little getting used to the fact that A) a live-action Barbie film has chewed through a number of scripts, filmmakers and potential actors, B) had scored the likes of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling to star and C) exists at all. Exist it does, however, and now America Ferrera is also aboard.

Greta Gerwig (also eyebrow-raising) is directing the film, which she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach (eyebrows now somewhere in the ionosphere). As Deadline's report reminds us, the plot is a complete mystery right now, so we have no idea what Gerwig, Baumbach and Robbie (who is a producer here) are cooking up, but it won't be a straightforward cash-grab toy tie-in. At least, we don't think so...

That veil of secrecy also means there is zero information on what role Ferrera will play, and all we really know right now is that Robbie is starring as the main character and Gosling's Ken. Can they all produce something as entertaining as Pixar's vision of Barbie and Ken, as seen in the Toy Story films? We'll find out when this one arrives, probably next year.

As for Ferrera, she has WeWork series WeCrashed due on Apple TV+ next month and is putting pieces together to direct her first film, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter.
