All The Boys Love Mandy Lane starlet Amber Heard is set to join the long list of beauties chilled by John Carpenter's horror in his latest The Ward. Heard will play a young woman fighting off a malicious ghost when she becomes trapped in a mental hospital.

Carpenter is excited to work with the young actress, saying: " I am especially pleased to be working with Amber because I know she will create a powerful central performance." Amber is a busy girl in 2009: with four films in post-production, including Ex-Terminators, The Joneses, The River Why and The Stepfather. She is also part of the ensemble cast for Brett Easton Ellis adaptation The Informers which has been languishing in Nowheresville for a while, but is due for release this year.

Carpenter, meanwhile, has been on a little hiatus for the past few years but is back in the directors chair, not only with The Ward but also with Riot, starring Nicholas Cage. He is also rumoured to be working on remakes of his old classics Escape From New York and They Live.

The screenplay, penned by Michael and Shawn Rasmussen is, according to Carpenter: "the kind of script that I've been looking for: a complex, visceral story, full of suspense and scares." Shooting begins in May.
