We've known for a while that original Evil Dead filmmaking trio Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce "Ash" Campbell were planning a new film in the franchise, setting up a brand new story set in the same deadite-afflicted world. The official details have arrived, with word that Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan will star in Evil Dead Rise

The Hole In The Ground filmmaker Lee Cronin is still on board to write and direct the new film, which will switch up the format this time. From the official synopsis: "Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, Evil Dead Rise tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sutherland and Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable."

"I’m thrilled to bring Evil Dead back to its original home at New Line 40 years after the release of the first film," says Raimi. "The company’s history as pioneers of horror speaks for itself. I’m equally excited to be working with Lee Cronin, whose gifts as a storyteller make him the ideal filmmaker to continue the enduring legacy of the franchise.

"At its core, Evil Dead is about ordinary people overcoming extraordinarily terrifying situations," comments Campbell, "I can’t wait for Alyssa and Lily to fill the blood-soaked shoes of those who have come before them and carry on that tradition."

The wrinkle here will be that the movie is currently headed only for release on HBO Max, at least in the States. Deadline's story mentions that the UK will see the film via Canal Plus (which points to StudioCanal).
