The awards season is cruising towards its big finish with the Oscars in a couple of weeks, but there has still been room for some of the other big trophy sessions. The Directors Guild handed out its awards at the weekend and** Birdman**’s Alejandro G. Iñárritu took home the main film prize.
“I never expected to be here tonight talking to you — never,” he said in his acceptance speech Saturday night at the Century Plaza hotel in Los Angeles. “I am openly humbled.” Inarritu beat the likes of Richard Linklater, Clint Eastwood, Morten Tyldum and Wes Anderson, raising the very real likelihood that he’ll be taking the stage at the Academy Awards.
Laura Poitras won the documentary film-directing award for her Edward Snowden film Citizenfour, while female directors also did well on the TV front, with Homeland’s Lesli Linka Glatter scoring a win for television drama, Jill Soloway nabbing the comedy award for Transparent and Lisa Cholodenko lifting a prize for miniseries Olive Kitteridge.
