The chatter about the third Spider-Man film crossing universes is intensifying as word arrives that Alfred Molina will reprise his role as Spider-Man 2's Doctor Otto Octavius – AKA Doc Octopus – to cause problems for Tom Holland's web-slinger.
Octavius, who was a brilliant scientist driven to villainy after a failed experiment killed his wife and left him neurologically fused to metal tentacles, was a highlight in Sam Raimi's 2004 Spider-outing, one of the best villains in one of the best superhero entries out there.
This marks the latest crossover for the new Holland film, which has Jon Watts back directing again. Jamie Foxx is already aboard as Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which had Andrew Garfield as Spidey. This latest piece of casting lends credence to the idea that both Tobey Maguire and Garfield will show up as their respective takes on Peter Parker, and Collider has heard that we can expect other actors from previous Spider-Man movies too. Benedict Cumberbatch is on to be Doctor Strange, while the likes of current trilogy cast Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon and Tony Revolori are all expected to return.
The latest news follows reports from Geeks Worldwide reporting that Molina had been spotted on the set of the latest live-action Spider-Man movie. Whatever it ends up being called – Spider-Man: Home Invasion? – the movie should be out on 17 December next year.
