It's just a few days since we learned that Michael Giacchino would be replacing Alexandre Desplat as composer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but at least we know that Desplat will still be conjuring themes for strange creatures and fantastical worlds. He's aboard to score Luc Besson's Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets.
The director took to Twitter to welcome the composer, dropping what we figure is a "subtle" reference to his previous, albeit temporary gig.
And from what we've seen of it so far, including footage screened at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Valerian is shaping up to be a composer's dream in terms of visual material to work from.
Adapted from Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières' beloved comic book series, the story finds Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) as special operatives for the human territories who are part of the force maintaining order in the galaxy. They're dispatched to the enormous city of Alpha, a sprawling, ever-evolving city that is home to thousands of species from all parts of the universe. And though it seems to be a peaceful utopia working for the good of all its inhabitants, dark forces are lurking under the surface, and the entire human race might be in danger...
Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets will be in UK cinemas on July 21 next year. And now we know it'll sound pretty great.
