With director Tim Story due to put the new Shaft film – which is currently known as Son Of Shaft – before the cameras next month, he's been tracking down the cast he needs. X-Men: Apocalypse's Alexandra Shipp is the latest recruit.
The new take on the classic character will feature the return of the original Shaft, Richard Roundtree, Samuel L. Jackson, who played his nephew in the 2000 reboot, and Jessie T. Usher. The latter will be the son of Jackson's character, an FBI agent, trained in high tech crime and is forced to team up with his old man in a clash of cultures and after a long estrangement to investigate who killed his best friend. Deadline's story doesn't specify what Shipp will be playing in the film, but she's nabbed a lead role.
Kenya Barris wrote the script for the film, which has yet to secure a release date. As for Shipp, she'll be back as Storm in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, headed to UK screens on 2 November next year.
