As if the very concept of ‘men’ in general wasn’t scary enough, master of dread Alex Garland (Ex-Machina, Annihilation) has chosen to make them the subject of his return to cinemas. Men stars Jessie Buckley as Harper, a woman grieving the death of her husband (Gangs Of London and I May Destroy You star Paapa Essiedu, shown falling from a balcony) who goes to stay at a picturesque home in the countryside, and ends up being stalked by a mysterious male presence. A24 dropped the full trailer for the film today – have a watch below.
The trippy trailer gives us a lot more insight than the previous teaser, revealing the many faces of the men Harper comes across during her trip – all of which, unsettlingly, are various versions of No Time To Die and Years And Years actor Rory Kinnear. They include the farmer-type guy Harper is renting the home from, a white-haired priest who accuses her of having a role to play in her husband’s death, a bearded bartender, a very unhelpful policeman, several pub-goers, and, perhaps most unnervingly of all, a young boy wearing a clown mask.
There’s also hints of the horror that awaits, with a tree of fallen apples that Farmer Rory refers to as ‘forbidden fruit’ suggesting a biblical theme, flashes of bloody silhouettes and Harper getting handy with a knife at an intruder coming through the letterbox. We’ll find out exactly what’s in store when Men hits cinemas on 20 May.
