Though he’s usually to be found being the suave, successful, and occasionally mad Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock, Alec Baldwin also likes to belt out ‘80s hair band tunes. At least, that’s what he’ll be doing when he joins the cast of musical adaptation **Rock of Ages **for director Adam Shankman.
The Hollywood Reporter picked up a tweet from Shankman confirming Baldwin’s participation. He’s been rumoured for the film for a while now, circling the part of former rocker and now club owner Dennis Dupree.
It’s Dupree’s establishment, the Bourbon Room, that forms the central focus for the plot where small-town girl Sherrie (Julianne Hough) comes to Hollywood looking to secure her rock dreams, but has to settle for working at the club as a waitress. While German developers are trying to get the place closed down as part of their plan to gentrify the Sunset Strip, there’s also preening, successful rocker Stacee Jaxx to deal with. Jaxx will be played in full mullety glory by Tom Cruise.
Mary J Blige is also locked in for the cast, and Russell Brand may yet jump on board, though he’s still just a rumour for now. Shankman plans to start shooting in May.
