Film by film, Disney is going through your childhood favourites and remaking them in live-action – and next year will bring three new takes on their animated classics. As well as Tim Burton’s Dumbo and Jon Favreau’s The Lion King, we’re getting Guy Ritchie’s take on Aladdin in May. With the release just over six months away, the first poster has now been revealed – sure to evoke intense feelings of nostalgia for anyone with fond memories of the 1992 version.
This new rendering of the magic lamp marks a pleasing call-back to the 1992 theatrical poster, which also featured the lamp front-and-centre – here’s a reminder if your memory doesn’t stretch back 26 years.
The new poster was revealed by Will Smith, who'll be playing the genie in this version. He’s the biggest name attached here, with up-and-coming actor Mena Massoud in the lead role and Power Rangers’ Naomi Scott playing Princess Jasmine. Jafar will be played by Marwan Kenzari. Ritchie’s film will include a couple of new songs, co-written by Disney music legend Alan Menken and writing duo Pasek & Paul – behind the likes of La La Land, The Greatest Showman, and stage musical Dear Evan Hansen.
With the first poster now out in the wild, it shouldn’t be long before we get a glimpse at those Arabian nights in a trailer – and the film is set to hit UK cinemas on 24 May.
