After a sidestep into action thriller territory with The Guest, Adam Wingard will be returning to a more familiar path for his next film. The Woods, written by his usual cohort Simon Barrett, is a horror yarn about students on a camping trip that goes somewhat awry{
Not much more is known about the story so far, beyond the not-unexpected idea that something eerie is lurking in the trees to hinder the campers' fun. But if it sounds like the most generic of generic set-ups, bear in mind the off-kilter You're Next's take on the home-invasion. Subverting really obvious tropes is something Wingard and Barrett particularly enjoy.
"The experiment of both The Guest and You’re Next was a gradually shifting tone," Barrett explained to Empire recently. "The movie gets funnier and funnier as it goes on until you realise it’s 100% joking. But at the beginning it’s 100% serious. As a viewer I think that’s really fun and interesting."
The Woods (not to be confused with Corin Hardy's The Hallow, which was called The Woods for a while) has Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Keith Calder and Jessica Wu aboard as producers, and is coming together at Lionsgate. Wingard is apparently looking to cast unknowns for a shoot in the spring.
