Fans of Adam Wingard’s The Guest have now been waiting on a sequel for eight years. The Dan Stevens-starring (quasi-supernatural) thriller about a drifter who’s not everything he appears to be quickly became a cult hit, with its ‘80s synthwave soundtrack, stellar central performance, and playful genre know-how – but with Wingard going on to more blockbustery territory in the years since (including last year’s Godzilla Vs. Kong), a follow-up never, well, followed. Until earlier this year, when – on April Fool’s Day, of all days – he surprise-dropped aThe Guest IIsoundtrack; no matter that the film itself doesn’t exist.
Except, it seems one day it might. Speaking to Empire about the sequel-soundtrack’s creation, Wingard said that – even though it was always approached as a fun music-based project – it might actually result in a second chapter for the mysterious David. “It’s really pushed me and Simon [Barrett, writer] into a creative headspace. We’re talking about developed a potential sequel as a real project,” the director says, adding that star Dan Stevens “would love to do it.” Not only that, but it could arrive in a different form to the first story. “Maybe the more interesting thing isn’t doing a sequel to The Guest,” he teases. “Maybe it’s doing a limited series, something we could really sink our teeth into.”
For Wingard, the soundtrack was a chance to return to a film that means a lot to him. “It’s probably my favourite movie that I’ve made,” he says. “It feels like the one that I was able to project the most of myself into.” Fingers crossed, he’ll be able to project even more into a sequel – whether in cinemas, or as a series.
