Adam Shankman Sings Rock Of Ages

Adam Shankman, the man who brought us the Hairspray movie-cal, is returning to the musical with a film adaptation of current Broadway hit Rock of Ages. For those of you who haven't seen it, it's a musical based on classic '80s rock by the likes of Journey, Poison, Whitesnake, Pat Benatar and Joan Jett (yes, really).

The plot sees a small-town girl (livin' in a lonely wo-oo-orld, perhaps?) who goes to legendary LA rock club Rock of Ages in 1987 and falls in love with a big city rocker there. Not the most complex story ever, perhaps, but judging by the show's sizzle reel here there are protests and strippers and, er, jazzercisers involved somewhere too. As well as enough hair to make Rapunzel jealous, of course.

The movie script's been written by Chris D'Arienzo, who also wrote the show and clearly knows his mullets from his shags. No casting's been announced just yet, but Shankman is hoping to get big star names since, he reckons, the musical is respectable again. Just one suggestion: make it very, very clear that this has nothing to do with Brett Michael's Rock of Love show, and people might just sign up.
