When Empire got time with James Cameron towards the end of 2018, we asked him your reader questions – and one of them was a chance to finally get an answer to an oft-wondered query: where are those Blu-ray transfers of The Abyss and True Lies? Two of Cameron’s most beloved movies have never made it to an HD disc – but it seems like that’s about to change. Skip Kimball, a cinema colourist who worked on Avatar and Alita: Battle Angel, posted an intriguing shot on Instagram, showing an editing suite all ready for The Abyss with the caption: “This is happening on stage on this weekend!” The post is hashtagged ‘#4K’, ‘#BluRay’, ‘#TheAbyssBluRay’, and ‘#Remaster’.
“Man, it’s on my to-do list,” Cameron told Empire last year when questioned about the remasters. “It’s a question of time-management. True Lies and The Abyss both have Blu-ray transfers that are complete for my review. The problem is the next 14 hours when I have to go back and trim the color and get each one perfect. That’s 28 hours. I don’t have 28 hours.”
It looks like Cameron must have found a little bit of spare time in the wake of Alita’s release, and amid the production of Avatar 2 – and with The Abyss approaching its 30th anniversary this year, here’s hoping we’ll get a new pin-sharp transfer before the end of 2019. Now, can we have True Lies next, please?
