While we've been hoping for the box office to make a successful return from the pandemic, the signs have been mixed of late, with some movies splitting their income between screens big and small and others arriving to limited results. A Quiet Place Part II has become one of the big success stories as the world starts to emerge from the worst of COVID, crossing the $100 million mark at the box office.
One of the first new releases to rely entirely on cinemas Stateside (albeit with a shorter window of exclusivity before it heads for VOD and Paramount+), the horror/drama/thriller has been a big player, opening strong and even reclaiming its place at the top of the charts. Globally, it has made more than $178 million, which might not have seemed big in the pre-pandemic era of billion-dollar releases, but it's certainly healthy.
Godzilla Vs Kong, which has been in cinemas (but also HBO Max across the pond), is hovering close to the $100 million mark in the US, but has yet to cross it.
But the news hasn't been all good this weekend, with word of disappointment for In The Heights. The musical opened to a quiet $11.4 million, enough for second place, but still behind the third week of John Krasinski's alien-invasion thriller. Warner Bros. will no doubt be hoping that Heights shows the sort of legs that turned The Greatest Showman into a cult favourite and eventual success story. Heights opens this week in the UK.
