Can cancer be funny? That’s the challenge faced by 50/50, which goes the dramedy route and finds Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a man named Adam battling the Big C with the help of best mate Seth Rogen. The trailer’s now online over at Apple.
Directed by The Wackness’ Jonathan Levine, 50/50 is based on the real life experience of writer Will Reiser, who fought the disease (though as the comic intro to the trailer featuring Reiser, Rogen and co-producer Evan Goldberg explains, we’ll have to wait and see if he makes it).
We’re introduced to Adam as he learns he has a tumour and starts to process the idea that he now has a 50/50 chance of survival. There’s also the small matter of losing his hair to chemotherapy treatments, the question of whether his condition can help him pick up girls and the impact it has on his emotional stability.

With Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anjelica Huston and Philip Baker Hall also in the cast, 50/50 has a September 30 release date set for the US, but there’s no firm information about a UK release yet.
