Longest Day, The

A far cry from the gore-drenched Saving Private Ryan, legendary producer Darryl F. Zanuck's heartfelt recreation of the D-Day landings is, in its own way, every bit as memorable. Zanuck had four directors toiling in the cinematic trenches, but reportedly shot many of the interiors himself.

He also assembled a frankly incredible cast, including Henry Fonda, Richard Burton, Robert Mitchum and John Wayne. At three hours it does seem bloody long at times, but is still a suitably epic tribute.
