His movies rarely see screens here in the UK, but in the States, Tyler Perry is a box office force to be reckoned with. And when he brings out his trademark Madea character, he often finds success. So it is as Halloween approaches, and his sequel Boo 2! A Madea Halloween has swept all competition aside this weekend, with $21.6 million according to studio estimates.
The critic-proof comic horror movie faced little challenge from Gerard Butler's latest action pic, the delayed disaster movie Geostorm. With terrible reviews, the film launched in second place, taking in $13.3 million, hardly a good start for a movie that cost more than $120 million to make (in comparison, the latest Madea entry's production price tag was $25 million). In third place was last week's champ, Happy Death Day, making $9.3 million. And Blade Runner 2049 fell to fourth with $7.1 million. Rounding out the top five was the week's third new entry, based-on-truth firefighter tale Only The Brave, with $6 million.
The Foreigner slipped to sixth with $5.4 million, while It was seventh on $3.5 million. And you have to head all the way down to eighth to find the critically lambasted crime thriller The Snowman, which could only rustle up $3.4 million.
American Made was down to ninth with $3.1 million, while Kingsman: The Golden Circle fell to 10th on $3 million.
