This year's Super Bowl has naturally been affected by the pandemic like everything else – there are concerns about parties becoming super spreader events, while movies advertised may still end up being pushed because cinemas aren't able to fully reopen yet.
That has had a real knock-on effect on the number of spots – this year's haul of ads was a wasteland as studios and companies tried to mitigate losses and didn't look to bet too big on frustrated punters anticipating entertainment that might not arrive for months.
We've rounded up the movies and shows – well, show – that ran ads, and as a bonus, we're including product ads that either riffed on movies or used known actors in an interesting way.
Movies
Raya And The Last Dragon
Even the behemoth that is Disney has not been immune to schedule shifts and issues – closed theme parks and all. One of its solutions is splitting some releases between cinemas and Disney+. Raya is the next animated offering on the way, and this new look spot aims to show off the epic scale and the comedy side courtesy of Awkwafina's Sisu, the titular last dragon.
Fast & Furious 9
You knew the Fast crew would rev the throttle for their new film's Super Bowl spot, and indeed, in its brief running time, it squeezes in references to family and then lots of high-octane action (including the requisite vehicular nonsense). Plus! Helen Mirren letting loose, John Cena looking intense and Charlize Theron winking. No sign of the gang rocketing into space yet, but it's only 30 seconds, what more did you want?
Old
After a lot of small teases, M Night Shyamalan takes the wraps off of his latest chiller, which is about a family (led by Gael García Bernal ) enjoying a secluded beach until strange things start to happen... specifically, everyone is aging at an accelerated rate.
Nobody
Not only can Bob Odenkirk's Hutch Mansell kick lots of ass, he can apparently also whip up a decent lasagne. This new spot essentially remixes the trailer that we've already seen, so it has less impact (unless you don't count the punches) than the looks at movies we'd yet to really see anything from.
Coming 2 America
The power of this spot for Amazon's sequel to the 1988 Eddie Murphy comedy is diluted, coming on the heels of the latest trailer, which dropped just a few days ago. It's still good to see this group back, though.
TV
The Falcon And The Winter Soldier
Marvel has been knocking it out of the park with its Disney+ output so far, wrapping mystery around MCU mythology and beyond with WandaVision. Up next is what looks on the surface to be a more straightforward action-adventure, albeit one anchored by the squabbling duo of Sam "Falcon" Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and James "Bucky" Barnes, the man formerly known as The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). The action looks impressive, the interplay between the main duo still crackles and we welcome the return of Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp).
And the rest...
Cadillac
To highlight its new hands-free system, the car company had Timothée Chalamet as Edgar Scissorhands, the son of Johnny Depp's Edward. Add in Winona Ryder reprising her role as Kim, and the stage is set for the Internet to melt down.
Uber Eats
It's Wayne's World! Wayne's World! Party time! Excellent! Yes, Mike Myers and Dana Carvey reunite as their iconic rock fans and cable access TV hosts so the food delivery service can persuade US viewers to eat local. Given how much people have relied upon delivery services in the current climate, it's not a shock to see them going big.
Amazon Alexa
Chattering digital assistants have become ubiquitous in the years since their launch, but while there's always still the slight whiff of Black Mirror about them, what if they were shaped like Michael B. Jordan? That's the concept of this comical ad.
Squarespace
Encouraging us to pursue our own passions instead of working away in an office (not that that's such a huge thing at the moment), website building/hosting company Squarespace had Dolly Parton perform a new take on her classic 9 To 5 song.
Michelob ULTRA Organic Seltzer
In an age of Fake News, Michelob plays on the idea of what's real and what isn't with a host of celebrity lookalikes and the real Don Cheadle.
Doritos 3D
A frankly upsetting flat Matthew McConaughey struggles through life until the potato chips help bring him back to a more filled out existence.
GM
When Will Ferrell discovers that Norway is outperforming the US in electric vehicle production, he recruits Kenan Thompson and Awkwafina to protest. In some small way, it feels like a sequel to Eurovision Song Contest, but we're not sure that's the takeaway here.
