As anyone who watched TV’s Bridezillas will know, a wedding can turn any woman into a screaming control freak – at least, that’s the premise of this not-so-romantic comedy. Best friends Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Liv (Kate Hudson) are so obsessed with having the best wedding, they attempt to sabotage each other’s nuptials with such feminine weapons as hair dye and fake tan – all because their ceremonies fall on the same day. Despite Hathaway’s perky charms, these are not likeable or funny heroines. Sidekicks compensate: enter Kristen Johnston as Emma’s teacher colleague with a nice line in backhanded compliments (“I wish I could just do the bare minimum. I admire you for that”). But even she can’t save Bride Wars from being merely watchable for women, and a definite no-no for men.
