Worms: Collection

Wriggling its way onto shelves in the run-up to the release of Worms: Revolution, Team 17’s Worms: Collection delivers a triple dose of gaming from a simpler time into the hands of the modern day joy-pad junkies who have spent most of this generation and the last suckling on the teat of the triple-A blockbuster.

Previously only on offer as downloadable titles via PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, this kooky anthology shoehorns the 2D crackers – Worms, Worms 2: Armageddon – and the so-so 3D Worms: Ultimate Mayhem onto a single disc. And unsurprisingly, it’s Ultimate Mayhem that fares the worst with its choppy visuals, irksome camera and extended loading times, despite the multiple story campaigns and various modes you’ll find yourself sifting through should you make it past the technical ticks.

Whereas the first Worms sees the series at its most primitive with its minimal selection of weapons and basic challenges, Worms 2: Armageddon is arguably one of Team 17’s finest moments. By taking the cast iron formula that made the original so much fun and throwing in a myriad of customisation options, weapons and a meaty single player campaign the developer delivered a 2D series high that many true believers feel has yet to be toppled. And with added HD oomph, the invertebrate Armageddon has never looked better.
