Assassins Creed III is a beast. Arguably the single most ambitious title in Ubisoft development history, this third and presumably final chapter in current gen history is so colossal in fact, that the hours youll need to invest in it sail comfortably into double digit territory before you barely even begin to scratch the surface of whats on offer. Thankfully, almost every moment you do invest will be worth it.
This third instalment of the series epic narrative unfurls over a sizeable chunk of the 18th Century, with the American Revolution serving as the backdrop for an epic tale involving series stalwart Desmond Miles half-British, half-Native American ancestral assassin, Connor Kenway. And being that this is the final chapter in Desmonds saga the stakes are higher than ever before the present day is a mere month or so away from an apocalyptic curtain call, and only our heroes genetic memories hold the key to stopping it.
Whilst the primary narrative focus sees you stalk and slay a huge roster of Templar targets, there are a vast amount of peripheral activities to sink your teeth into including managing Connors homestead, recruiting settlers, establishing trade links and taking to high seas to wage war. And on top of all that, theres a monstrous selection of multiplayer modes to wade through. Yes, there are some coding snafus and gameplay glitches, but weve been told that the bulk of these have been addressed in the meaty day one patch that the super publisher recommends you download to optimize your player experience.
So, in spite of the bumpy modern day missions and a slightly flaccid ending, Assassins Creed III is by far the grandest and most rewarding instalment in the series to date. As to whether or not its the finest moment in the series five-year history is simply a matter of personal opinion.
