Viggo Mortensen is the sort of man you can buy heading out into the woods for long periods, living off the land and generally enjoying himself away from the rat race. So casting him as a father who is raising his kids away from society makes sense. See him and his brood in the first trailer for Captain Fantastic.
The film, which is about to premiere at Cannes, finds Mortensen's Ben, who has dedicated his life to turning his kids into amazing adults using books, his own knowledge of the world and the freedom to explore who they are. But then tragedy strikes and the family is forced to venture outside their self-created paradise and face the challenges of their city-bound relations, who don't exactly understand their ways.
There are shades of The Mosquito Coast (albeit without quite the same obsessive edge) in this clash of parenting styles, and the cast includes George MacKay, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Zahn, Samantha Isler and Frank Langella. With Silicon Valley's Matt Ross on writing and directing duty, Captain Fantastic will be out in the UK on September 9.
