Remakes, reboots and nostalgia-powered projects are all the rage on screens big and small. You can now add a new take on Magnum P.I. to the mix, focusing on the main character's daughter.
Famously brought to life with charm and full 'tache power by Tom Selleck for eight seasons in the 1980s, Magnum was a fun romp of a detective show with picturesque locations, fast cars and, yes, a butler (John Hillerman's Higgins).
The new version, to be crafted by writer/producer John Rogers, aims to channel the same vibe but will focus on Lily "Tommy" Magnum, who works with her group of friends and associates to solve crimes while also investigating the overarching mystery of the blown spy operation that curtailed her career in Navy Intelligence. Will pop stop by? Who knows at this point, but you can bet they'll ask.
Eva Longoria and Ben Spector will co-produce the show through their company, and believe that the time is right for a new spin on Magnum. “We knew no one could replace the iconic role of Thomas Magnum, so John decided to make the reboot a sequel and continue the adventure of a Magnum — his daughter, who was established in the original series,” they said in a statement to Deadline. Universal TV is producing the new series for US network ABC.
