After providing some of the great concept art, graphic designs, pre-vis work, supervising the visual effects and even putting in a little stunt double work for Duncan Jones' Moon, Gavin Rothery is making his film directing debut, hiring Theo James to star in Archive.
Rothery has been building up to this point, working on shorts and other projects and has written the script for the new thriller. James will star as a scientist working on humanoid androids who is very close to a big breakthrough. But unbeknownst to most of his colleagues, his real aim is to be reunited with his late wife through technology.
Sales company Independent (which also represented Moon) is offering rights to the film at Cannes and it has regular Ben Wheatley collaborator Laurie Rose aboard as director of photography. "Sci-fi is at its most powerful when exploring the human condition through compelling high concepts and Gavin has created an incredibly soulful story that, when combined with his singular vision and Theo’s electric talent, add up to a film that will sit proudly amongst the best of the sci-fi canon," Independent's Philip Herd tells Screen International. There's no word on a release date for this one yet.
James will next be seen in Backstabbing For Beginners, which should be on screens this year.
