Warning: possible Captain America: Civil War spoilers follow
Actor, filmmaker and occasional cock-er-knee geezer, Don Cheadle is a man of many parts. He has two upcoming releases in April that showcase his substantial range. First comes Miles Ahead, a jazz odyssey through the life of Miles Davis that he’s directing and starring in, followed by a reprise of Rhodey in Captain America: Civil War. Expect serious Cheadle upheaval in the Marvelverse, the actor warns in this month’s Empire Interview.
“They’ve got good reason to think so,” says Cheadle of Redditors' belief that Colonel James Rupert Rhodes will be scoring a plot in Arlington in this movie. “Doesn’t look good for Rhodey,” he adds with a laugh. “He did hit the ground kind of hard!"
Of course, Marvel has not been shy of showing War Machine's potentially terminal scene unfolding in the trailers to date. A curveball? Rhodey would certainly be the highest-profile casualty in the MCU, excepting perhaps Quicksilver and 67,000 Chitauri.
Cheadle has an interesting slant on the whole Terrence Howard-shaped elephant in the room. “It looked different to what it was,” he explains of the passing of the torch, “- that I had moved Terrence Howard out of a seat. But that’s not what happened at all. He was not coming back and there was an open seat and I was asked to fill it."
