Not actually a home movie featuring someone in Rachel Weisz's family filming her with their cameraphone, My Cousin Rachel refers to the new Daphne Du Maurier adaptation starring the actress as a mysterious, alluring cousin named... Well, that part at least is right. Check out the first trailer for the drama, which also stars Sam Claflin, below.
Du Maurier's tome, which was previously adapted for the big screen in 1952 and by the BBC in 1983, follows Philip (CLaflin), an orphan who is used to living a happy life with his cousin and guardian, Ambrose. But when Ambrose is off on one of his health-related holidays, he reports back that he has fallen for Rachel (Weisz), a distant relation, the tone of his letters starts to change and Philip decides to go and investigate. Yet he underestimates the power the beautiful Rachel will have over him...
Roger Michell's film takes both the book (with a script by the director himself) and ideas from the original film, but this first trailer represents more of the mood of the thing than much of the plot. And could we please call a moratorium on covers of pop songs played in a slower, dramatic fashion for trailers? At least for a while?
With Holliday Grainger and Iain Glen also in the cast, My Cousin Rachel will be out in the UK on 9 June.
