We're fairly certain the film isn't named for Barry Manilow's 1974 pop ballad, but action thriller Mandy has Nicolas Cage – a man who rarely turns down film roles these days – attached to star.
Panos Cosmatos is in the director's chair for the movie, which will see Cage as Red Miller, broken and haunted after the love of his life is slaughtered by a crazed religious sect. He decides to enact his vengeance on the group, kicking off a hunt through the wilderness for a film set in 1983.
"Panos is one of the most vital young filmmakers alive, a pop-culture Kubrick in the making," Daniel Noah, Head of Development for production company SpectreVision, which he runs alongside Josh C. Walker and Elijah Wood. "Nicolas Cage is a veritable god to those of us who grew up watching his classic performances. Bringing these two together for this surrealist, heavy-metal-soaked story of battle axes and demon bikers is unfathomably exciting to us." So, just your average Cage action thriller, then.
With the backing of Umedia and Piccadilly Pictures, Cosmatos will kick off shooting this summer in Belgium. Cage will next crop up in drama Inconceivable, out in the States on 30 June but currently without a UK release.
