Nicolas Cage has been appearing in a lot of movies these past few years. And not all of them hit the heights of his past career. Some, in fact, skip cinemas entirely, shuffling off directly to home entertainment formats. One such example is offbeat comedy Army Of One.
While releasing straight to VOD/Blu-ray etc. no longer holds quite the stigma it once did, it's still a little surprising for a movie that has Larry Charles directing.
Army Of One is the based-on-truth story of one Gary Faulkner (Cage), a flamboyant Colorado resident who in 2010 decided he was going to be the man to take down Osama Bin Laden, Rambo-style. Armed with a sword he bought from a home shopping network, a pair of night-vision goggles and his fervent belief that he was doing God’s work in tracking down and wiping out one of the most dangerous men on the planet.
God, in the movie's case, is played by Russell Brand a man who, if we're honest, he probably shouldn't be allowed in a venue where people refer to him as the Almighty. As for Gary, you'll know of course that he didn't succeed in his mission, but the tale is enough in itself. If you're so inclined, you can read the Chris Heath article the movie is based on at GQ's site.
This one heads to Digital HD in the States on 4 November, followed by a Blu-ray, DVD and VOD release there on 15 November. There is no sign of a UK date yet, but surely you want to watch a movie where Nic Cage gets to be as loopy as he likes. And rides a donkey...
