UPDATE: Deadline's sources have confirmed Yeoh's casting, but with a twist: seems she won't be on the USS Discovery at all, but instead plays the captain of another vessel, the Shenzhou. Yeoh's character is called Han Bo, and will be a big part of the show's first season.
Despite the initial excitement of _Star Tre_k's return to television with new series Discovery, the show has had faced challenges to its shields during a bumpy development that has seen its launch date shift and the departure of executive producer Bryan Fuller. There may be some good news at last, though, as Coming Soon reports that Michelle Yeoh has been cast on the show.
The outlet got word from Nicholas Meyer, the Star Trek movie veteran who is working as a consulting producer on the new show. Speaking about the show during an event to promote a new release of his 1979 pic Time After Time, he dropped word that Yeoh is the first name cast for Discovery.
He didn't elaborate on what she'll be playing, but we're already hoping she could be the captain or the previously reported Number One, who will be interacting with the crew in a new dynamic. Star Trek Discovery is set 10 years before Kirk and his crew's original five-year mission and will be introducing plenty of new concepts and aliens.
Discovery is now scheduled to kick off in May on CBS in the US, before it switches to the All Access streaming service from its second episode. UK viewers will be able to watch the show on Netflix.
