More than a year ago, we learned that Mark Millar had made a deal with Lorenzo di Bonaventura to adapt Millar's comic Jupiter's Legacy into a movie. Things have moved on to the scripting stage and brothers Brian and Mark Gunn are already at work.
Legacy, the Image Comics title co-created by Millar and artist Frank Quitely with colours and lettering from Peter Doherty, explores the generational conflict between a group of aging superheroes who gained their powers in the 1930s from a mysterious island and used them for the good of mankind, and their children, who have largely struggled with living up to the legacy of their parents. The kids have largely become vacuous celebri-types, better known for parties and premieres than saving the world.
If the writers' (who worked on Journey 2: The Mysterious Island) last name sounds familiar, it's because they're related to Guardians Of The Galaxy's James Gunn, and comic book lore is big in that family. And they can relate to the story. "It feels very human-sized. We ourselves grew up in a sprawling Irish-Catholic family that was sorta like a discount Midwest version of the Kennedys," the writers tell Comicbook.com. "Our parents and grandparents were political leaders, lawyers, judges, titans of industry. So when we were growing up we struggled with this family legacy – this burden of living up to the standards of those who came before us, this sense that the past was noble and glamorous while our lives were somehow less than, a falling off. Some of us from this current generation have gone on to do cool things, while others of us have dealt with feeling like misfits and disappointments. It’s this struggle which is at the heart of Jupiter’s Legacy, and which we’re really excited to bring to the screen." For more from the pair, head to the site.
Millar has given them his seal of approval, and now the project will continue its journey through development and, if it's lucky, to the screen.
