The seemingly endless march of reboots and remakes continues apace... The latest to be given a cinematic make-over is 1988 John Candy/Dan Aykroyd comedy The Great Outdoors, which Universal is looking to turn into a star vehicle for reliable comedy performer Kevin Hart.
Back in the 1980s, the original – written by John Hughes and directed by Howard Deutch – saw Candy as Chicago native Chester "Chet" Ripley, a man looking to get away from it all on a relaxing lakeside holiday in Wisconsin with wife Connie (Stephanie Faracy) and sons Buck (Chris Young) and Ben (Ian Giatti). All is great under Connie's sister Kate (Annette Bening) and her annoying investment broker husband Roman (Aykroyd) crash the place with their twin daughters. Hilarity mostly ensues.
This new take has Billions writer Randall Green tackling the script and Michael De Luca producing, but has yet to lock in a director. But Hart's commitment means it'll probably start to move a little quicker. Hart has a voice in the Captain Underpants movie (out 28 July), will be seen in sequel/reboot Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (26 December) and has a role opposite Bryan Cranston in Untouchable, itself a remake of the French drama comedy The Intouchables.
