While our American cousins were busy announcing awards from big cities across in the country, far be it from us in the UK to be left behind. The British Independent Film Awards were handed out Sunday evening and the big winners were American Honey, I, Daniel Blake and Under The Shadow.
Andrea Arnold's latest, the story of a young woman who falls in with a group travelling across the States selling magazine subscriptions and partying, won the top film prize, Best Director for Arnold, Best Actress for star Sasha Lane, and a craft trophy for director of photographer Robbie Ryan. Ken Loach's I, Daniel Blake, which had scored seven nominations, won two – Best Actor for star Dave Johns, with fellow actor Hayley Squires taking Most Promising Newcomer.
Empire dark horse The Greasy Strangler wrangled the Discovery award and the States were also represented by Moonlight, which has been winning lots of awards.
