You normally expect the Pope to be an older geezer waving from balconies, leading masses and trying to evolve the Catholic doctrine. But Paolo Sorrentino's The Young Pope offers something quite different. Well, expect for the balconies. Check out the latest trailer below.
The miniseries, a collaboration between Sky, HBO and Canal Plus, has Jude Law playing Lenny Belardo, AKA Pius XIII, the Vatican’s first ever American Pope. Why have the College of Cardinals picked this unlikely candidate from a pool of venerable types? Good question. Expect the man they’ve picked to be more devious and less easily steered than they thought.
Shrewd and naïve, old-fashioned and very modern, doubtful and resolute, ironic, pedantic, hurt and ruthless, Pius XIII tries to walk the long path of human loneliness to find a God for mankind. And for himself. All while taking drags on cigarettes and looking to spark a revolution in the Vatican.
With Diane Keaton, Ludivine Sagnier and a particularly scowly and growly James Cromwell also in the cast, The Young Pope will hit our TVs on October 27.
